Math and Music Seminar in Lingnan

A wonderful Math and Music seminar was put on stage by the OCC on campus on 23 April 2014. Professor Dave Kung, a visiting scholar from the St. Mary’s College of Maryland, who is a Mathematician as well as an amateur violinist, delivered a fascinating talk on a very interesting topic called “Mathematical Equations: Connections Between Math & Music” to both students and teachers of Lingnan.

Throughout the talk, Professor Kung drew connections of Mathematics and music with daily life examples. He made lively illustrations on various regimes of harmonic analysis; he also partnered with his students for demonstrating some scientific phenomena as well as playing some beautiful musical pieces. The event was concluded by a wonderful finale performance made by Professor Kung on an extract of the Bach Chaconne.

Prof. Stephen Chan, Director of Core Curriculum and General Education, addressed at the opening.

Prof. Kung introduced his precious love to the audience.

Prof. Kung illustrated the mathematical theory with his student demonstrating on the violin.

Prof. Kung used a pipe to show the difference between a flute and a clarinet.

Another demonstration by Prof. Kung and his students.
