LUIAS Welcomes Five Esteemed Scholars

Lingnan University Institute for Advanced Study (LUIAS) is thrilled to announce the appointment of five distinguished scholars who have recently joined our esteemed academic community: Prof Michael Howlett, Prof Eugene Tyrtyshnikov, and Prof Nieng Yan join us as Lingnan Fellows, while Prof Lars Tummers and Prof Zidong Xu join as Senior Lingnan Scholars.
Prof Michael Howlett
Burnaby Mountain Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. Prof Howlett brings extensive expertise in public policy and governance, significantly shaping both theoretical and practical aspects of the field. His influential work in policy formulation and design has established him as a leader in the field.
Prof Eugene Tyrtyshnikov
An esteemed mathematician and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2016, Prof Tyrtyshnikov serves as the Director of the Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics and is a Professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University. His key contributions include the matrix framework for analysing the spectral distribution of Toeplitz matrices and tensor-train algorithms for multidimensional problems.
Prof Nieng Yan
Founding President of the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation, Director of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, and a University Professor at Tsinghua University. Prof Yan is renowned for her pioneering research on membrane transport proteins, with significant implications for healthcare. Her achievements have won her numerous accolades. She was an International Member of the US National Academy of Sciences, an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof Lars Tummers
A globally recognised expert in public leadership and behaviour change. As one of the most-cited scholars in public administration, Prof Tummers has been instrumental in founding the interdisciplinary field of Behavioural Public Administration, which integrates psychology with public administration. He is currently the Chair Professor of Public Administration and Organisational Science at Utrecht University.
Prof Zidong Xu
A prominent scholar in Chinese Literature, Prof Xu is the Zijiang Distinguished Visiting Professor at East China Normal University and Honorary Professor at the School of Chinese, University of Hong Kong. He has authored key works such as “Re-reading 20th-Century Chinese Fiction” (2021) and “A Close Reading of Eileen Chang” (2020). Prof Xu's achievements have been recognised through prestigious honours such as the 2022 China Huacheng Literary Award for Criticism.
