Professor Shiyi CHEN

Professor Shiyi Chen, an internationally renowned mechanic and physicist, was born in October 1956 in Tiantai, Zhejiang. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries. He currently serves as the President of the Eastern Institute of Technology, Ningbo.

Professor Chen was one of the first scholars from mainland China to be elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society after the reform and opening-up policy. He was also selected as one of the "40 Influential Returnees in 40 Years of Reform and Opening-up". He has made outstanding achievements in the fields of fluid turbulence theory, computational fluid dynamics, and industrial software, and is one of the founders of the Lattice Boltzmann computational method, which is one of the most active research topics worldwide in the research of hydrodynamics.

Professor Chen graduated from the Department of Mechanics at Zhejiang University in 1981, and then pursued further studies in the Department of Mechanics at Peking University, where he obtained his Master's and Ph.D. degrees. He was the Alonzo G. Decker Jr. Chair in Engineering and Science and has served as the Chair of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, the Founding Dean of the College of Engineering at Peking University, and the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at Peking University. In 2015, he became the President of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), leading the university to become one of the "Double First-Class" universities in China.
