Introduction

Subjective well-being (SWB) is a broad and multifaceted concept that measures an individual's personal evaluation of his/her own quality of life and emotional experiences. It typically contains three components: life satisfaction, positive affect and negative affect. SWB is attracting growing scholarly attention in urban China. However, many questions about how to explain and enhance SWB remain unresolved. This lecture mainly discusses the following three questions: (1) Whether and how does urbanization influence people’s SWB? This will be explored through an urban-rural comparison as well as the outcomes of migration. (2) Which urban environments influence the urbanites’ SWB, and why? Some theoretical angles and empirical evidences will be summarized. (3) How to improve the urbanites’ SWB through urban governance and urban planning? The scalar traps in making public policies will be discussed in detail.
