Rural Food-Energy-Water Systems (FEWS)
Food-Energy-Water Systems: Tackling 21st Century Challenges
Understanding the interconnections between Food, Energy, and Water (FEW) systems is essential for addressing some of the most pressing global challenges. This course equips students with the knowledge and tools to analyze these critical systems and their impact on poverty, sustainability, and community resilience.
From the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), global efforts have focused on mitigating vulnerabilities within FEW systems. Today, factors such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and industrial agriculture continue to destabilize this delicate balance.
In this course, you will:
- Explore the dynamic relationships among food, energy, and water systems.
- Understand how resource limitations and interdependencies shape global and local challenges.
- Critically assess the validity of global-scale data and learn to navigate its complexities.
- Build a foundation to analyze community-level data with an appreciation for scale and context.
By embracing complexity and data-driven insights, you will be prepared to design solutions that promote sustainability and equity in a rapidly changing world.
