Lingnan University (LU) recently participated in a radio broadcasting session named “長進課程: 樂齡大本營" produced by Radio 5, Hong Kong, with the aim of educating the general public about the latest news and research findings in gerontechnology. LU's team invited student to join the recording and promoted the health-related master programmes at the recent session. Dr. Chloe Siu, from the School of Graduate Studies and Institute of Policy Studies, who also manages the Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place (GTSA) Project at LU, shared the features of three health-related master programmes offered by the university: Master of Social Sciences in Health Services Management (HSM), Master of Science in Health Analytics and Management (HAM), and Master of Science in Smart Ageing and Gerontology (SAG). Dr. Siu emphasized the importance of gerontechnology in the ageing society and how these three programmes are related to this field. She explained that the three master programmes also aim to develop professionals who can create innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by the ageing population.

One of the students of the Master of Science in Health Analytics and Management (HAM), Mr. Eric Lek, shared his learning experiences and insights from different programmes. Eric emphasized the importance of data management in gerontechnology and how it can improve the quality of care for the elderly. He also shared his experience of joining the certificate course offered by the GTSA at LU, which allowed him to perceive newly received knowledge from different angles to further enhance the development of elder care services.

Eric wrote a reflection to share his learning experiences: “The sharing experience at RTHK was invaluable in a way that allowed me to perceive newly received knowledge from different angles. Especially, the certificate course offered by the GTSA involved 6 areas in which we learn to improve assistance for elders in terms of: healthcare, dining, living, transport, exercising and learning. Because of the vast area these topics cover, it requires time and experience in understanding them fully. Somewhere between reviewing what I have learnt so far at LU in preparation for the show and engaging in conversation with the show host, I found myself thinking about new ways of involving Data Analytics/ Health Management/ Gerontechnology in enhancing care and improving services for those in need, extending the words on books to skills and methods that can help.

I was thrilled to find out the recordings will be disseminated on RTHK’s Radio 5, where the channel usually garners high interest from senior audience because it has been a regret over my recent study that opportunities in reaching the elderly directly was limited. Yet sharing my experience from both the courses from GTSA and School of Graduate Studies on RTHK this time, it was fulfilling as I felt like I was really able to give back a little! The certificate course experience was a robust one.

Lastly, I feel grateful for RTHK’s team in fostering a friendly environment and for my instructor’s indispensable support. After this experience I feel compelled and supported in my passion. I hope to explore new thoughts and connect with likeminded young people in cultivating a culture that opts to prioritizes human-centric health care and services for the elderly."

LU is committed to providing quality education and promoting innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by the ageing population. The health-related master programmes aim to develop professionals who can contribute to the betterment of the healthcare industry and society as a whole.
