In the last decade, many governments in East and Southeast Asia have increased study spaces and enrolments in their higher education systems, so as to speed up the transition to a knowledge-based economy and innovation-centric entrepreneurialism.
These endeavours, however, have exacerbated problems of graduate unemployment and underemployment, as the rapid expansion in talent supply did not really meet market demands. They also triggered fierce debates on social and economic development and public policy related research.
Following its “Impact with Care” research philosophy, Lingnan University has formed a research team to conduct comparative and international research on the massification and privatisation of higher education, the changing social production of labour, youth transition from education to work, and related youth well-being and public policy implications.
To address these regional and global issues, the team has established strong research partnerships with centres at the University of Oxford and the Institute of Education, University College London in the UK, and the Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Turku, Finland, as well as research groups based in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Stavanger in Norway, the Graduate School of Education, Peking University, China, and the College of Education, Chengchi University in Taiwan.
Thanks to these partnerships, Lingnan scholars have published their findings in respected journals, including Critical Sociology, Journal of Education and Work, Higher Education Quarterly and Higher Education Policy, and also co-hosted international symposia and conferences offering academia, practitioners, and postgraduate students platforms to exchange ideas.
