Mr Henry Sam Chien-man, has served in various capacities, including as Honorary Court Member of Lingnan University, School Supervisor of the Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) Primary School, Director of Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong), and Member of the Board of Trustees of Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University, as well as a Director of the Lingnan Education Organization. He has shown unwavering dedication to Lingnan's educational mission. Since 2003, he has made numerous donations to Lingnan University and has been instrumental in establishing the "Lingnan University 125th Anniversary Education Fund." This fund supports scholarships, summer internship programs, and other activities, benefiting countless students.
From Macau to Hong Kong: A Journey of Learning and Lingnan Affection Continues Henry was born and raised in Macau. As a child, he began his lifelong connection with Lingnan by enrolling in Macau Lingnan Middle School, which offered kindergarten through high school education. He and his family members received their education at Lingnan from kindergarten onwards, making them dedicated Lingnanians. In 1967, after graduating from Macau Lingnan Middle School, he faced the decision of pursuing further studies. At that time, Macau did not have a university. Coincidentally, Lingnan College was re-established in Hong Kong and began its first round of admissions. Following the principal's recommendation, he decided to pursue his undergraduate degree at Lingnan College in Hong Kong. He fondly recalls, "I took an eight-hour boat ride from Macau to Hong Kong, travelling from day to night, thinking I would be the first to arrive at the school, only to find that two classmates had already beaten me there."
During his time at Lingnan, Henry actively participated in various activities. He showed a strong concern for society and demonstrated civic awareness. He witnessed the establishment of the first student union and served as the Vice President of the second student union. He also promoted the Lingnan Student Union's membership in the Hong Kong Federation of Students and actively participated in numerous preparatory works. In addition to his involvement in the student union, Henry was also dedicated to the Rotaract Club. Since 1986, he has held various positions in the Rotary Club of North District, Hong Kong, serving the local community while actively participating in the club's efforts to build schools in impoverished areas of Mainland China. He personally funded the construction of four primary schools in the Tongren area of Guizhou Province and sponsored students from these areas to attend university, bringing educational opportunities to children in remote regions.
Henry fondly recalls the harmonious relationships he had with his classmates. He frequently meets with many Lingnan friends for meals at the Lingnan Club. The precept "For God, for Country, and for Lingnan," passed down by Lingnan predecessors, has inspired him from a young age. Coupled with the school motto, "Education for Service," Henry has put these values into practice through his actions and set an example for others to follow. "I am very happy to do these things. When you enjoy doing something, you find that everything becomes meaningful."
Remembering the Teachings of Mentors: The Far-Reaching Impact of Liberal Arts Education At that time, Lingnan College offered programs in the liberal arts, sciences, and business. Henry had a particular fondness for business, so he chose to major in Business Administration with a major in Economics. During his studies, Henry shared, "When I heard about the re-establishment of Lingnan, many renowned Lingnan alumni immediately agreed to return to teaching. Although they were not family, they had a bond with Lingnan that was as strong as blood-tied family." As a result, most of the professors had deep connections with Lingnan and possessed extensive experience and high standing in the business world, such as the well-known Professor Lau Chung Him.
He also mentioned, "The professors not only taught us our knowledge on the book but also shared the history of Lingnan and their experiences in Hong Kong's business community, which was incredibly valuable. Some professors, despite their busy schedules, would teach us two classes in the morning and then head back to Central for work by 9:30 AM. During that time, we never slacked off; we made sure to be in class promptly at 8:30 AM. The students were diligent, and the teachers were extremely dedicated."
One of the most unforgettable mentors for Henry was Mr Wai Kee Kau. He was not only a teacher but also a life mentor. Mr Wai imparted many valuable life lessons that greatly benefited Henry. Mr Wai said, "Think twice before you speak or act. Always consider things carefully before taking action and avoid impulsive decisions." This advice profoundly influenced Henry.
Mr. Wai cared deeply for every student, both in their academic pursuits and post-graduation employment. He always went above and beyond to help and encourage each student. For instance, after Henry graduated and returned to Macau for work, Mr Wai personally called him and arranged interviews for him with several major companies in Hong Kong, including Rediffusion Television, Tai Cheung Properties Limited, and Hutchison International Ltd. He also analyzed the market prospects, explaining that Hong Kong offered more opportunities than Macau. This care and encouragement motivated Henry to stay and develop his career in Hong Kong after graduation. The Lingnan spirit has always been a part of Henry's life, fostering a deep bond with Lingnan.
From Novice to Successful Entrepreneur: A Journey of Continuous Struggle and Perseverance After graduating from Lingnan College in 1973, Henry embraced the spirit of perseverance and adventure instilled by Lingnan, embarking on his career journey. In 1985, he founded the RCC (Contracting) Limited., overseeing engineering projects for various international retail brands in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. His responsibilities included writing technical reports for clients, evaluating store locations, building structures, safety standards, and managing construction projects.
During his entrepreneurial journey, one of the most memorable experiences for Henry was waking up in the morning and not knowing where he was. For about ten years, he was constantly flying between Southeast Asia and Mainland China. "There was a period when I would have a two-hour meeting in Shanghai in the morning, then fly to Chongqing in the evening. Or I would spend a few hours in Chongqing and then take a night flight to another city. The schedule was extremely tight. So, there were times when I woke up in the morning and had no idea where I was. It was a period of hard work and perseverance that I look back on fondly."
Henry has been tireless in nurturing young students, often personally attending and supporting student-related activities and projects. To provide students with summer internship opportunities, he specifically created a position at his company and chose a rather introverted applicant for personal mentorship. During the internship, he not only funded the student's participation in various meetings and activities, charitable works, but also personally taught and developed the student's practical work skills.
Encouraging Future Generations to Apply Knowledge and Carry forward Lingnan Culture "Coming together at Lingnan is a matter of fate, and you should cherish this time, enjoying the academic environment and learning atmosphere. Here, you can find great mentors and friends. After graduation, be dedicated to your work, choose a job you love, striving to excel in your career. Once you achieve a certain level of success, consider how you can give back to your alma mater or contribute to society. This is also part of legacy of Lingnan culture and spirit."
Henry shared, "Apply what you learn to serve society. During your studies, absorb as much knowledge as possible and apply it to your life and work. In your spare time, serve the groups you belong to and participate in alumni organizations as much as possible." He believes that coming to Lingnan is not just about academic progress but also about achieving comprehensive development in all aspects of life. He hopes that every Lingnan student can find their direction here, make lifelong friends, and continue to move forward on their future paths, achieving personal success and giving back to society.
