Credit Transfer/ Course Exemption for Core Curriculum

For Core Curriculum (CC) courses, credit transfer/course exemption shall normally be limited to 2 Common Core courses and 15 credits of Cluster courses, except otherwise specified.

Credit transfer/course exemption of CC courses may be granted or considered in the following ways:

1. Block Credit Transfer for Senior Year Entry from 2026 onwards 
   If you are directly admitted to Year 3 as a graduate from local sub‑degree programmes accredited at Level 4 of the Qualifications Framework, you may be eligible for block credit transfer comprising 21 credits in the Core Curriculum.
   
   Upon admission, you will be granted:

   • 9 credits in the Common Core, including CCC8011 Critical Thinking: Analysis and Argumentation, CCC8013 The Process of Science, and CCC8014 China in World History
   • 12 credits in the Clusters

   This means you will only need to complete 6 credits in the Common Core, specifically CCC8012 The Making of Hong Kong and CCC8015 Generative Artificial Intelligence.
    

2. Block Credit Transfer for First-Year-First-Degree (FYFD) Entry from 2025 onwards
   If you are directly admitted to Year 2 as a student/graduate from local sub-degree programmes accredited with Level 4 of the Qualifications Framework, you may be eligible for block credit transfer comprising 12 credits in the Core Curriculum.
   
   Upon admission, you will be granted:
   • 12 credits in the Clusters

This means you will need to complete all 15 credits in the Common Core.
 

3. Course-based Credit Transfer/ Course Exemption            
   Complying to the Academic Regulations, you may apply for credit transfer/course exemption of CC courses if you have completed a course in another tertiary institution that

   1. carried a similar weight in terms of credit in the degree programmes of that institution; and 

   2. aligned with the aims and Programme Intended Learning Outcomes of CC and fulfilled the intended learning outcomes of the Common Core course or the Cluster concerned.

How to Apply for Credit Transfer/ Course Exemption for Core Curriculum Courses

For Newly-Admitted Students

Please refer to the procedures at the Registry.

For Student Exchange Programmes (SEP)

For outgoing exchange students, please read the Guidelines at the Office of Global Education carefully.

Those who wish to transfer a course to fulfil your Cluster requirements, you should submit the:

1. Completed Study Plan for the Core Curriculum course(s); AND
2. Detailed syllabi of the courses to be taken at the host institution.

Please submit the above documents to the Office of the Core Curriculum at [email protected] for the approval of the Director of Core Curriculum.

All applications for credit transfer/course exemption are considered on a case-by-case basis. Approval given in the past should not be viewed as constituting a precedent.
