This presentation explores the ethical and ontological implications of recent efforts in biocomputing to merge lab-grown human neurons with microchips. It considers whether such systems meet certain criteria for intelligence and sentience, and whether there are grounds for granting them moral status. The aim is not necessarily to advocate for a specific position on the nature of these entities or the morality of creating them, but to highlight several limitations of applying prominent ontological concepts to this sort of human-AI hybrid and to raise awareness of several key ethical concerns that should be considered as the technology advances.
