Aims and Learning Outcomes of the Programme

Programme Aims

The MA ACHM aims to train students to develop career-driven practical and research skills in arts and cultural heritage management through the professional and technical knowledge they will obtain from the programme. Specifically, the programme seeks to help students achieve the following objectives:

1. To build on their existing experience or interest to develop knowledge and skills within arts and cultural heritage management;
2. To develop a critical understanding of the cross-sector and interdisciplinary nature of both cultural heritage organisations and the infrastructure - both state and commercial that supports them;
3. To enhance their own thinking related to the sector in an environment where they will receive expert academic and practitioner supervision;
4. To both engage with the key issues of the discipline and provide them with a body of work that can be used to develop a career within the sector;
5. To gain experience in a professional working environment through exposure to relevant arts and heritage organisations, but also to be able to critically analyse the ‘culture of the organisation’ and its management practice; and
6. To develop an understanding and practice of cross-cultural communication and leadership skills through group-based work, with colleagues from a diversity of cultures/countries.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon completion of the MA ACHM programme, students will be able to:

Knowledge & Understanding (K&U):

1. Illustrate an informed critical understanding of the forms and formation of cultural heritage policy and the value of arts and heritage from an international perspective.
2. Analyse the complex relationship between theory and practice within the development of cultural heritage policy and its impact on cultural heritage sites in different cultural contexts.
3. Analyse visitor volume, experience and needs, as well as associated marketing techniques.
4. Compare and evaluate contemporary administrative and management practice within arts and heritage organisations and their potential professional practice in relation to them.

Cognitive & Thinking Skills(C&T):

1. Critically reflect upon the development of their administrative and management practice.
2. Analyse political, economic, social, technological, and legal contexts in relation to developing a cultural heritage policy.

Subject-Specific Skills and Professional Behaviours and Attitudes (SSS&PBA):

1. Apply management structures, principles, and planning skills to cultural heritage projects and organisations.
2. Work effectively as a member of a team and/or a leader in developing an administrative/management approach to a heritage project or organisation.
3. Be able to apply insights from key academic research and theory related to arts & cultural heritage management in management and conservation contexts.
