Biography

Professor Chen Xi is the Dean and Chair Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, School of Interdisciplinary Studies. He is a distinguished scholar in engineering science and sustainability, who addresses real-world challenges in energy, environment, nanotechnology and biology. As one of the international leaders who pioneered distributed carbon dioxide capture and utilisation, he has been extensively involved in scientific research and development related to carbon neutrality for more than ten years.

Professor Chen obtained a Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from Harvard University. Before joining Lingnan, he was a tenured Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering and the Director of Earth Engineering Center at Columbia University. Professor Chen has published over 400 SCI papers, and his papers have been cited over 20,000 times with the H index of above 80. He has received numerous awards which include the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), which is the highest award officially awarded to young scholars by the US government.

Abstract

As the foundation of modern technology, Engineering Science rooted from mechanics underpins the development of most engineering branches, from aerospace to biomedical to civil to environmental to materials to mechanical engineering. Over many decades, the so-called "hot research area" has come and gone, which often puzzles graduate students and young researchers regarding choosing their research topic and career development. In this presentation, I will use my personal academic experience to illustrate how to establish a broad foundation of knowledge across multiple disciplines, and to actively pursue and predict the next waves of research trends. I will also share tips from my personal experience that may lead to a fruitful career in academia.
