Programme Highlights

To directly address the urgent talent needs and strategic priorities outlined, namely, the convergence of technologies in Industry 4.0 and the specific developmental goals of the GBA and Hong Kong, the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (WJYSIS) launched a new taught doctoral programme, the Doctor of Smart Manufacturing (DSM).

Nowadays, most taught postgraduate programmes related to smart manufacturing in Hong Kong primarily exist at the master’s level, such as the Master of Science in Advanced Manufacturing or Master of Science in Robotics. As the first specialized taught doctoral programme in Hong Kong dedicated to the integration of smart technologies, materials, manufacturing engineering and sustainable production, the DSM stands out for its interdisciplinary depth and industry-aligned vision. This unique programme is designed to cultivate strategic technology leaders who possess a global outlook, systems thinking, and the capacity to drive innovation-led industrial transformation.

The curriculum is meticulously structured to explore forefront areas such as additive manufacturing, robotics and automation, and advanced materials, while strengthening participants’ abilities to formulate and execute solutions for strategically complex challenges. In addition, DSM emphasizes sustainable industry and development, offering relevant elective courses such as carbon neutrality and environmental governance, sustainable industry and green energy. By equipping students with both technical mastery and translational skills, the programme prepares them to lead in the rapidly evolving landscape of advanced manufacturing and contribute meaningfully to their organisations’ adaptive and competitive goals.

Furthermore, the DSM programme adopts a blended teaching method that accommodates both fresh graduates and industry professionals, while priority will be given to those with experience. This approach not only widens access to high-level education but also fosters a collaborative and dynamic learning environment.
