Our Mission

The major mission of CEAL is to train the English language skills, academic and professional English competence, and intercultural competence of its students, and to provide language support to help students succeed in their academic studies through the core and elective courses of our ELE curriculum as well as co-curricular language activities. Within the context of a liberal arts education, CEAL further offers a range of additional language courses in Japanese, Korean, French and Spanish, which increase their exposure to new cultures. In addition, CEAL provides students with independent learning opportunities within its courses and within the ELSS, to develop their potential for life-long learning and for success in the global workplace. 

While individual courses set their own specific and tailored learning outcomes, the broad learning outcomes of CEAL’s English courses could be defined and outlined as follows:  

1. To consolidate and enhance students’ ability to gain knowledge and information through reading and listening to English;
2. To facilitate students to express ideas, thoughts, opinions and knowledge through speaking and writing in English; 
3. To equip students with the necessary English language skills and conventions for their immediate and future academic and professional development; 
4. To aid students to develop an awareness of their own proficiency levels in the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and offer them tools for their further development in all four areas as well as grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary; 
5. To introduce students to new concepts, skills and techniques which cultivate an increased ability to think and communicate logically, critically, multi-modally and globally in English; 
6. To foster learner autonomy and independent learning techniques among students in preparation for life-long language learning in an AI-mediated and technology-enhanced world.
