He has broad research interests in entrepreneurial aspects of marketing and internationalization. His recent research on international entrepreneurship has focused on marketing capabilities and international new ventures. He brings diverse perspectives from international marketing, entrepreneurship, and international business to the study of international entrepreneurship. He has published extensively in a number of premier refereed journals, including Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of World Business, Industrial Marketing Management, International Business Review, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Business Research, and others. He is currently in the Editorial Board for the Journal of International Marketing and a few other journals. Most recently, he served as one of the guest editors in a special issue of Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), as well as a special issue in Industrial Marketing Management, among others. Professor Zhou was a recipient of the Silver Medal for scholars with substantive contributions to the Journal of International Business Studies (2019). His research excellence is further highlighted by his inclusion in the top 2% of scientists in Stanford University's global citations ranking and recognition by the Web of Science Group (2023).
Over the past years Professor Zhou has focused on the key area of research centered around International Entrepreneurship (IE). Over the past two decades, IE research has emerged as an important area of scholarly inquiry. The theoretical development in the area generally posts significant challenges to the path-dependent and sequential approach to internationalization. Interestingly, new perspectives and thoughts are emerged in recent years, which potentially provide renewed lens for further research. In the midst of theoretical advances and empirical work surrounding the creation and capturing of product-market opportunities across national borders, there is an important need for a better reflection on prior studies and draw implications for fresh insights. In the spirit of moving forward IE research from diverse theoretical foundations, Professor Zhou has devoted most of his research efforts, collaborating with a few internationally recognized scholars, and published dozens of high-quality papers in the same area of expertise. Below is a list of selective publications in the IE domain.
