    字林洋行是十九世紀英商在上海創辦的最主要的新聞出版機構，也是當時英商在華最大的報業印刷出版集團。它旗下的一系列中英文報紙，具體詳盡地記載了近代中國百年的社會場景，從不同視角解說了曲折的歷史進程，是一座尚待挖掘的文獻寶庫，具有不可替代的學術價值和史料價值。

     

    依託上海圖書館豐富的館藏資源，《全國報刊索引》歷時5年，傾力打造了《字林洋行中英文報紙全文數據庫》（1850～1951），收錄了《北華捷報》、《字林西報》、《上海新報》、《滬報》、《漢報》、《消閒報》、《字林西報行名錄》等中英文報紙。作為歷史檔案的重要組成部分，《字林洋行中英文報紙全文數據庫》（1850～1951）不僅真實生動還原了珍稀史料風貌，還豐富了報刊數字資源，為研究近代中國提供了彌足珍貴的材料。
