Professor Michael HOWLETT

Professor Michael Howlett is currently the Burnaby Mountain Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU). He began working at SFU in 1989 after teaching at Queen’s University and the University of Victoria. Since then, he has been Visiting Professor at SFU, the National University of Singapore, the University of Cagliari, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Professor Howlett has published leading textbooks and articles on topics related to Canadian politics, natural resource and environmental policy, Canadian public policy, public policy-making, and policy instruments and design, among others. He also served as co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Political Science and is currently the editor-in-chief of Policy Sciences, as well as co-editor of the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis, Policy & Society, and Policy Design and Practice.

Professor Howlett's current work focuses on aspects of policy formulation and design, including the study of policy tools and instruments, as well as formulation processes more generally.
