OUR PROGRAMME

The department hosts the BA Contemporary English Studies (BACES) programme. We strive to connect the study of literature and language with the contemporary world, allowing students to explore the varied historical, cultural and social contexts of English.

Why English? English Studies is the academic study of the English language across various contexts and cultures. By encouraging students to engage with this diversity and to develop and articulate their own ideas, the BACES programme fosters communicative, analytical and intercultural skills and prepares them for a wide range of careers.

Why now? The world is changing but English has never been more important as the language of business, cultural and technological exchange. Studying English is far more than just studying a language: it opens up new cultural worlds and develops the skills and qualities that employers are looking for.

Why here? Our approach is strongly cross-cultural, recognising the diversity of English in global communication and cultural expression. Small classes ensure personal attention from staff members, who are internationally-recognised scholars in their fields.

The 5 ‘C’s of the BACES programme are Communication, Creativity, Culture, Collaboration and Curiosity. Read more about our Programme Values and Programme Learning Outcomes.

Welcome Message

Welcome to the Department of English! We combine literature and language and offer a stimulating campus environment, generating insights into language, culture, and communication in both local and global contexts. Our dedicated staff members have interests ranging from twentieth-century American literature to language in the media. We are active in research and our achievements were recognised as internationally excellent in Hong Kong’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise.

Our BACES programme develops key skills such as critical thinking, the careful analysis of texts and contexts, and the ability to communicate well in speech and writing. We encourage students to publish their creative work, to participate in extracurricular activities, and to seek out meaningful internship opportunities. BACES graduates can choose from a wide range of career and postgraduate study options.

Hong Kong is a fast-moving city and we have seen many changes. Something that remains constant on our BA Contemporary English Studies programme is the way we try to find time in our busy university lives – time to get to know our students, time to introduce them to our own interests and passions in language and literature, time to enjoy the beautiful campus and its surroundings. Above and beyond teaching knowledge and skills, we aim to help students appreciate the aesthetic values of literature and the power and beauty of language itself...READ MORE

Our Alumni
Rukayya Bibi, Graduated in 2022
"the English department in Lingnan is very special because we have the most dedicated and devoted professors who are always there for their students! Whether you have one question or ten, they are all just one email away! "
Brian Lau, Graduated in 2019
"I appreciate that the department offers both literary and linguistics courses to its students. I was not a big fan of literary works before I took some of the literary courses. After taking them, not only did it clear my bias, but I also started to become appreciative of the works."
Jason Hung, Graduated in 2019
"Without these fruitful experiences of being an English major, I would not have become who I am today. Indeed, I am most grateful for the professional guidance and support from the professors, as well as the lifelong friendships with my former CES classmates."
Fiona Zheng, Graduated in 2017
“Their classes and teaching styles continued to inspire me even after graduation.”
Patrizia Yeung, Graduated in 2010
“I particularly appreciated how the Department not only focuses on practical courses but also on contemporary literary works from a variety of genres.”
