When writing, avoid verbal discrimination against migrant domestic helpers. Consider the following guidelines:

• Respectful Address: Use their English names or ‘Jie Jie’ to refer to them.

   

• Avoid Objectification: Do not describe their employers as ‘masters’ as migrant domestic helpers represent a respected profession, not servitude.

   

• Eliminate Racial and Gender Discrimination: Refrain from using derogatory terms or labels, such as ‘Yin Yin’or ‘Bin Mei’.

   

• Serious Reporting: When reporting abuse or unequal treatment, use serious language that focuses on the incident, rather than diverting attention to the employer’s background, appearance, or education, or emphasising the migrant domestic helpers’ education levels.

   

• Challenge Negative Stereotypes: Avoid labeling migrant domestic helpers as having low cultural levels, being poor, or unhygienic, as this will negatively influence readers’ perceptions.
