HRM541 Human Resource Analytics
This is a master-course designed to immerse students in the dynamic field of HR analytics. The course covers a broad spectrum of analytical techniques, from foundational statistics to advanced AI applications, emphasizing how these tools can transform HR functions such as recruitment, performance management, and employee engagement. Students will also be adept at managing stakeholder expectations and making data-driven decisions that align with organisational goals, preparing them for advanced roles in HR analytics and management.
HRM542 Human Resource Information System
The course covers Electronic Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions, and the integration of AI technologies, providing a detailed overview of each system's impact on organisational efficiency and HR management. Throughout this course, students will engage in practical exercises and case studies, applying their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. The course also examines future trends in HRIS, preparing students to navigate and leverage the latest technological advancements in their professional careers in HR and related fields.
HRM543 New Compliance of HR Policy
Aimed at equipping HR professionals with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex legal and ethical landscapes of modern workplaces, the course covers essential topics such as the sociocultural influences on Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness (DEI), strategic DEI approaches, data privacy laws, and the technical aspects of data security within HR systems. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, as well as students will engage in debates, case studies, and projects that emphasize compliance, best practices, and the integration of DEI principles into everyday HR practices.
HRM544 Digital Adoption and Transformation
This course explores the spectrum of digital transformation strategies, from the adoption of basic digital tools like SaaS and ERP to the comprehensive integration of AI automation in pioneering AI-native companies. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, and interactive projects, the course delves into the challenges and opportunities presented by digital transformation. Students will gain insights into effectively balancing technological advancements with strategic business planning and ethical governance.
MGT504 Contemporary Human Resource Management
This course examines a range of contemporary human resource management (HRM) issues. To meet the challenges of today’s complex and dynamic business environment, HRM offers a range of strategies, techniques and practices for managing people and organisations. The course provides students with an understanding of how HRM can be an integrating force, linking various strands of business activity to help the organisation meet its objectives through effective people management. The course covers the key functional areas of HRM such as recruitment and selection, training and development, and managing global HRM. It also explores a number of cutting-edge themes of increasing importance to HR practitioners and academics such as talent management and the knowledge-driven organisation.
MGT506 Action Learning Projects
The Action Learning Projects provide opportunities for students to learn through execution, generate new insights and draw conclusions on their learning by continuous involvement in learning reflection process. Students will explore and critically examine real-life practices and problems related to people management of selected organisations, and recommend possible solutions with action plans. To strengthen students’ whole-person development in concepts and action learning skills, they are required to participate actively in seminars and conferences, workshops on research and communication skills, company visits and field trips, etc. Students will also develop their leadership competence, team building, and problem-solving through organising learning activities.
MGT601 Managing Conflict in Organisations
This course is designed to introduce the role, importance, and methods of managing conflict in organisations. Students will be asked to consider the different forms of conflict in organisations and work-home interface. They will review and discuss research on conflict in work and cross-discipline teams, top management teams, leadership, between departments, and between organisations. Studies also indicate that well-manage conflict can promote quality decision-making, stronger relationships, innovation, organisational commitment, and employees’ well-being. Students will review and discuss research identifying major dynamics and conditions under which conflict can be constructive. Techniques in stress management and crisis management will also be introduced. The emphasis will be on giving students both an understanding and skills that they can use to manage conflict productively.
MGT602 Leadership in Organisations
Leadership effectiveness is determined by what leaders do. Leaders demonstrate their competence by setting worthwhile and challenging goals with followers, by showing confidence in followers and supporting their efforts to perform well and improve themselves, by recognising followers when they do a job well, and by behaving in a fair and ethical way. The purpose of this course is to introduce to students current knowledge on what effective leaders do so that students can perform important leadership behaviours such as those described earlier. When students can successfully carry out these behaviours, they can produce favourable results for their groups and organisations, and turned into effective leaders.
MGT604 Strategic Management
The course emphasises the value and process of strategic management. In addition to familiarising students with new subject matter, students are expected to integrate and apply their prior learning to strategic decision-making in organisations. The Strategic Management course is designed to explore an organisation’s vision mission, examine principles, techniques and models of organisational and environmental analysis. Discuss the theory and practice of strategy formulation and implementation such as corporate governance and business ethics for the development of effective strategic leadership.
MGT605 Managing Quality for People and Organisations
The course introduces to students the importance of people in managing business for quality. It also provides students with the concepts and practices of quality management and explores the need for managing business with a quality-oriented approach. The course will make use of a lot of current examples from organisations in both Hong Kong and overseas in expounding the importance of people in managing business for quality.
MGT606 Organisational Analysis and Change
This course provides students with systematic methods for diagnosing structural, cultural and political problems within the internal organisational environment, and will provide a thorough understanding of the issues involved in designing, implementing and evaluating organisational change. The course also examines the role of strategic and ethical leadership in organisational change, and in moving towards the ideals of the 'learning organisation'.
MGT507 Employee Learning and Career Development
This course imparts students with concepts and theories pertaining to the nature of learning and career development. It draws knowledge from psychology and management to understand how people learn and how people can be trained. The long term objective of this effort would be to benefit one’s and organisational employees’ careers. Topics to be explored include employee learning, managing the training and development department, systematic approaches to develop training programmes, career development for the self and organisational employees, and technology use in learning and development.
ORM515 Business Decision Making with Software (offered by MSceBSCM Programme)
Organisations often need to make decisions in their best interests in different situations, and Microsoft Excel is one of the most popular software that business people use to assist their decision making. This course introduces commonly used quantitative analysis techniques that facilitate scientific and systematic decision making. Students will learn how to employ appropriate decision making techniques to obtain the best solutions for a variety of business problems, and learn about the best-practices of spreadsheet modelling for clarity and communication. Through practicing these techniques and Excel functions, students will develop analytical and computer-based problem-solving skills, which can help them improve their performance at work or in daily life.

In addition, this curriculum includes an exploration of big data and artificial intelligence, providing insights into data processing and AI tools. Designed for IT professionals and enthusiasts, the course employs real-world examples and practical exercises using Alibaba Cloud. This approach ensures that learners gain valuable skills and are well-prepared for future technological advancements.

This elective course offers a comprehensive introduction to Python programming tailored specifically for business students. The primary objective of this course is to empower students with essential knowledge and skills to effectively apply Python programming within the realm of business practice. Students will acquire a solid foundation in the fundamentals of the Python programming language and explore its diverse applications in various business domains.
