Many believe that the interpersonal aggregation of harms is sometimes, but not always morally appropriate. I offer a novel view of why this would be true: Individual’s claim against being harmed aggregates depends upon the egalitarian duties of the claimant. Call this, “The Egalitarian Duty View.” I argue that, once stated more precisely, the Egalitarian Duty View delivers intuitively attractive verdicts about a range of cases and has explanatory virtues that other views lack.
