“The neglect of risks of net-negative future scenarios” by Prof. Oscar Horta
25 Mar 2024

Hybrid Research Seminar

The aim of this presentation will be threefold. It will first examine the reasons why the prevention of net-negative future scenarios haves been neglected thus far, especially in the philosophical literatures. These involve several important oversimplified assumptions in population axiology, not giving sufficient importance to state option and moral uncertainty, and the assumption of traditional views of moral consideration. It will then assess some of the different ways in which net-negative future scenarios could take place. The presentation will conclude by considering what lines of research can be especially promising to increase the evaluability of these risks.
