Aims and Learning Outcomes

The MResADS programme aims to:

  • Provide students with advanced knowledge and research skills in data science, encompassing state-of-the-art methodologies, emerging technologies, and innovative applications.
  • Foster a deep understanding of the theoretical foundations underlying advanced data science techniques, enabling students to contribute to the development of new methodologies and algorithms.
  • Cultivate strong research capabilities through rigorous coursework, supervised dissertation projects, and engagement with faculty-led research initiatives.
  • Bridge the gap between academic research and industry application through a unique industry attachment model that combines research rigor with real-world problem-solving.
  • Develop students' critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills, ensuring responsible and impactful applications of advanced data science techniques.
  • Prepare students for leadership roles in both academic and industrial settings, equipping them with the skills to drive innovation and guide data-driven decision-making at the highest levels.

 

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

On completing the MResADS programme, students will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate and synthesise the fundamental principles and methodologies of advanced data science and artificial intelligence (AI), demonstrating the potential to contribute to research and development in these fields.
  • Analyse and apply contemporary AI, data analytics, and other information technology techniques for managing, mining, analysing and visualising data across multiple disciplines.
  • Design, implement, deploy, and manage the solutions for real-world problems using cutting-edge data science and AI methodologies.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify appropriate research problems, data science methods, tools, and algorithms for specific real-world problems and to evaluate their performance and limitations in different scenarios.
  • Evaluate and apply ethical principles and responsible practices in the use of data science methods and tools, ensuring security, privacy, fairness, transparency, and accountability in data collection, analysis, and decision-making processes.
  • Synthesise and communicate complex findings effectively to diverse stakeholders, contributing to the advancement of research fields and demonstrating leadership in interdisciplinary and collaborative environments.
