The Lingnan University STEAM Education and Research Centre, in partnership with Fu Tai Elderly Home and the Hong Kong Old Age Nursing Association Limited, held the eighth installment of the "STEAM 'Smart Elderly' Activity at Elderly Home (including staff training)."
On June 20, 2024, in a delightful fusion of tradition and education, the Lingnan University STEAM Education and Research Centre, in collaboration with Fu Tai Elderly Home and the Hong Kong Old Age Nursing Association Limited, conducted its eighth "STEAM 'Smart Elderly' Activity" on June 20, 2024. This session was dedicated to the art of Chinese Character Calligraphy, offering a culturally rich experience to the elderly residents.
The event began with an enlightening introduction to the diverse styles and historical significance of East Asian calligraphy, captivating the elderly audience with fascinating details about this ancient art form. Participants were introduced to various calligraphy styles such as Kaishu (regular script), Xingshu (semi-cursive script), and Caoshu (cursive script). This educational segment fostered an engaging dialogue among the attendees, who shared personal stories and reflections on the art pieces.

In an interactive session, the staff presented examples of oracle bone script, inviting participants to explore and guess the meanings of these ancient characters. This activity not only piqued their curiosity but also deepened their understanding of the evolution of Chinese writing.

Further enriching the experience, the event delved into the "Four Treasures of the Study"—paper, brush, ink, and inkstone. The elderly learned about the significance and application of each tool, while also discovering the therapeutic benefits of calligraphy such as improved focus, mental clarity, and cognitive health.
The highlight of the day was the hands-on calligraphy practice. Guided by knowledgeable staff, the participants enthusiastically engaged in copying calligraphic works, embracing the creative process and expressing their artistic side. This session not only allowed them to appreciate the meticulous art of calligraphy but also to honor and connect with their cultural heritage.
The "STEAM 'Smart Elderly' Activity" proved to be a resounding success, significantly enriching the cultural and spiritual lives of its participants. Lingnan University looks forward to continuing these activities, promoting cultural arts among the elderly, and enhancing their quality of life through meaningful engagement and learning experiences.

In the next segment, the staff presented an oracle bone script and invited the elderly to guess their meanings, stimulating their curiosity and enhancing their understanding of the evolution of Chinese characters. The guessing and discussion process was met with high levels of participation and interaction, fostering a relaxed and enjoyable learning environment.
Subsequently, the team introduced the "Four Treasures of the Study"—paper, brush, ink, and inkstone—explaining their uses and characteristics. They also discussed calligraphy's benefits in enhancing concentration, calming the mind, and promoting cognitive health.
The event's highlight was the hands-on calligraphy practice session, where the elderly participants, guided by the staff, earnestly copied calligraphy works with brushes. This hands-on experience allowed them to enjoy the creative process of calligraphy and cultivate an appreciation and respect for traditional culture.
