Board of Graduate Studies (BGS)

Terms of Reference

To be responsible to the Senate for the academic standards and quality assurance of the programmes and courses offered by the School of Graduate Studies and to report thereon to the Senate from time to time;
To endorse new programme/course proposals, annual school reports, annual programme reports and 5-year programme reviews;
To serve as a forum to stimulate academic development, and research and knowledge transfer activities of the School;
To consider nominations from staff of the School and non-department-related academic staff in research centres who are affiliated to the School on the admission of research postgraduate students and make recommendations to the Task Force on Research Postgraduate Admission;
To be responsible to the Postgraduate Studies Committee for issues relating to the admission, studentship, progression and graduation of research postgraduate students, as well as the appointment of supervisors for research postgraduate students of the School and units affiliated to the School;
To endorse proposals related to application fees and tuition fees of taught postgraduate programmes of the School, on recommendations of the Finance Office, and submit them to the Postgraduate Studies Committee for approval;
To set up committees, task forces and working groups as appropriate in support of the academic and quality assurance work of the School;
To consider school-level matters, e.g. proposals related to School-wide promotional/learning enhancement activities and events; and
To perform any other duty as may be required by the Senate.

Membership

Chairman^#:	Dean of the School of Graduate Studies
Ex-officio Members:	Associate Dean of School of Graduate Studies Programme Directors of Taught Postgraduate Programmes (TPg) of the School
Co-opted Members^@:	All regular faculty members of the School who are full-time employees of the University^* Head of units affiliated to the School^* One research postgraduate student from the School or units affiliated to the School and elected among themselves^{^} One taught postgraduate student representative from each of the TPg of the School^{^}
Secretary:	Administrative Manager of the School of Graduate Studies

^#The main roles of the Chairperson are to convene and chair the meetings of the BGS. The Chairperson does not vote unless it is necessary to break a tie.

^*Those who are not already serving on this Board as members in another capacity
^{^}The student member shall be a full member of BGS and attends the meetings for agenda items relating to postgraduate studies matters, except those the Chairperson considers confidential.
