Professor Joshua Mok's Visit to Tohoku University in Japan


Professor Joshua Mok, Vice President and Dean of School of Graduate Studies, was invited by the Global Learning Center and Graduate School of Education of Tohoku University in Japan for an institutional visit to explore student exchange and research collaborations from 31 January to 1 February 2020. Professor Mok was well received by Professor Aki Yonezawa, Vice Director of International Strategy Office, Professor Kazuko Suematsu, Deputy Director of Global Learning Center, and Professor Tomohiro Yakuwa, Dean, and Professor Kazuhito Noguchi, Associate Dean of Graduate School of Education of Tohoku University. Very warm discussions on collaborations led to the agreement to develop student exchange, joint teaching courses, summer school and research collaborations.


During his visit, Professor Mok was also invited to give a public lecture. Sharing similar vision to promote Sustainable Development Goals between the two universities, Professor Mok shared how liberal education could contribute to sustainable development. Making reference to the unique role of Lingnan University in offering liberal arts education, informed by the combination of the best traditions of the East and the West, Professor Mok showcased the achievements of Lingnan University in teaching and learning innovations, research promoting IMPACT with CARE, and wider engagements through knowledge transfer activities. Professor Mok's talk was warmly received and good discussions concluded his public lecture. Professor Mok was accompanied by Dr Jing Liu, Associate Professor from Graduate School of Education, on a visit to Lu Xun Lecture Hall at Tohoku University, a designated venue to honour Lu Xun, one of the very distinguished leaders in contemporary Chinese history, who studied in the Japanese university before going back to China to embark on a new career and becoming a very influential author and political leader.
