Embracing Opportunities: The Evolving Journey of Christopher

Christopher Tao Hongyi began his academic journey with a strong desire to understand policy development and its societal impact. He chose the School of Graduate Studies (GS) at Lingnan University for its commitment to independent learning and the close-knit community between students and professors. “One thing I truly value at Lingnan is the intimate interaction between students and professors,” he states. This supportive environment opened doors to various opportunities, including research assistantships and collaborations, laying a solid foundation for his career.
Pursuing the Double Degree of Doctor of Policy Studies and PhD of Education Policy/Administration was a defining moment in Christopher's academic journey. This cross-regional experience enabled him to develop a systematic research perspective in comparative education, higher education internationalisation, and quality assurance, while enhancing his cross-cultural communication and policy analysis skills.
His time at the GS was further enriched by experiential learning opportunities, including internships and Postgraduate Summer School programme. “I participated in a Summer School programme at the University of Oxford and attended around 20 conferences across six different countries,” he shares. These experiences broadened his horizons and allowed him to engage with diverse perspectives in policy studies.
Beyond academics, Christopher emphasises the importance of maintaining a well-rounded life. GS offers a variety of programmes, including language classes and voluntary services, providing students with opportunities to learn about Hong Kong's culture and build lasting connections.
Currently, Christopher integrates academic inquiry with policy practice. He promotes global dialogue on high-quality education and sustainable development at Tsinghua University’s School of Education and the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education. “I have evolved from a researcher focused solely on scholarship into a practice-oriented scholar capable of bridging academic research and policy implementation.”
As Christopher looks to the future, he reflects on how the programme has shaped his outlook. He encourages his peers to embrace every opportunity available, underscoring the transformative impact of his experiences at Lingnan GS.
