Prof. Wang Binhua on Why Translators Matter More Than Ever in the AI Era

In the age of AI, what makes translators truly irreplaceable? Prof.r Wang Binhua, our new Professor and Head of the Centre for English and Additional Languages (CEAL), recently shared his insights on the vital role of translators as cross-cultural communicators and coordinators. He emphasised that translation education goes far beyond bilingual studies — it’s about developing professional-level competence in Intercultural Communication.

Prof. Wang Binhua joined the Department of Translation in January 2026. Previously he was Professor of Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Leeds (UK) from July 2017, where he served as Director of the Centre for Translation Studies and Programme Manager of the MA programmes in interpreting. He was elected to the “European Academy of Sciences and Arts” in 2023 and a Fellow of the “Chartered Institute of Linguists” in 2016.
