Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Translation
Programme Overview
In the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Translation at Lingnan, you’ll be learning more than how to translate between Chinese and English. You’ll be learning how to communicate across cultural divides. Want to become a world citizen? Well, you’ll get a chance to study abroad for one term at a sister institution located in Canada, Spain, Japan, Korea, just to name a few dreamy destinations. While in Hong Kong, you’ll be learning about everything you’re curious about, in law and business, technology and engineering, science and engineering, the Internet and AI. Is AI going to replace you? Not a chance! You’ve got a heart and a brain; you can think critically and with sympathy, unlike Chat GPT. But you will learn how to harness the power of AI to become a skilled multilingual, cross-cultural communicator.
In the programme, you’ll take courses in different kinds of specialised translation, interpreting, linguistics, and translation theory, criticism, and history. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply your learning in real-world contexts: corporate internships, exchange programmes, and service projects. When you graduate you can pursue all sorts of careers, not just translation and interpreting but also management, marketing, journalism, public relations, education, and even academic research.
Programme Structure
Academic courses will prepare you for postgraduate studies, if you want to go that route, while practical courses will prepare you for the job market and for life.
Students have to take compulsory courses within the first 4 years.

Students need to take at least 5 out of the 7 programme electives in one of the two concentrations (Concentration A: Cross-cultural Communication; Concentration B: Digital Corporate Communication) in order to fulfil the concentration requirement. Students have to take courses from both concentrations.

Note:
* Students with insufficient proficiency in Cantonese may substitute the course with an alternative course, TRA3224 Introduction to Putonghua and English Interpreting. Details regarding this option will be disseminated in the email about Academic Advising, which is sent each February.
@ Students who have taken TRA4301 Advanced Interpreting (C-E) or TRA4302 Advanced Interpreting (E-C) are not allowed to take this course.
^^ Students who have taken TRA4323 Legal Translation (C-E) and TRA4324 Legal Translation (E-C) are not allowed to take this course.
# This course can be taken by mainland students whose mother tongue is not Cantonese as a core interpreting course in replacement of TRA2101.
English Language Requirements
Students admitted from the 2017-18 intake, including students admitted to the first year or directly to the second year or above, are required to satisfy the following English language requirements.
Special Note for 2020-2021 intake
Effective from Term 2, 2020-21, students will take the Password Test in place of DELTA. An administrative system for booking test sessions will be accessible on CEAL's website (details to be announced by CEAL). Students are fully subsidised for their required attempt(s) for taking the Password Test in place of DELTA. If students would like to take the Test voluntarily, it would be at students' own cost.
I. Diagnostic English Language Tracking Assessment (DELTA)
- Undergraduate students who are admitted to Year 1 or directly to Year 2 are required to take DELTA twice respectively in their first year and second year of studies at Lingnan.
- Undergraduate students who are directly admitted to year 3 are required to take DELTA in their first year of study at Lingnan.
- Native English speakers who are exempted from taking the following courses are exempted from this requirement:
- For students admitted in 2018-19 or before: required LCE courses, viz. English for Communication I, II & III.
- For students admitted from 2019-20: University English I, University English II, English Language Enhancement elective(s) and Discipline-related professional communication course.
II. English Language Graduation Requirement
An overall band score of 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic) is set as the University-wide English language minimum graduation requirement while students of the following programmes shall attain different minimum threshold scores:
