Programme Objectives
The Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Global Economics and Banking programme is committed to nurturing global-minded students with the skills necessary to confront a wide array of problems. We instill in students a sense of civic duty, cultivating competencies, skills and sensibilities that enable graduates to pursue their goals in a rapidly changing social, cultural and economic environment in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.
Our Goals
- To instruct students with a solid understanding of theoretical and practical knowledge on global economics and banking;
- To inform students of the most recent advancements in the fields of economics and banking so that they can adapt to the quickly evolving global economy;
- To broaden students’ intellectual awareness for banking and finance industries beyond Hong Kong, especially in the Greater Bay Area and Asian-Pacific economies; and
- To ensure that students’ analytical and quantitative knowledge of economics, banking and finance will allow them to secure appropriate jobs upon graduation.

In line with the university graduation requirement, students will normally complete at least 120 credits for a four-year degree (or around half the credits for two-year top-up degree) upon graduation. In a 4-year programme, students need to fulfill the Language, Common Core and Cluster Courses in the first two years of study; they are expected to complete all Foundational Courses and four Required Courses that constitute the compulsory courses for the Programme at the second and third year of study; from the third year onwards, students can take the Major Electives by choosing from a wide array of economics and banking related courses offered by the programmme.

In line with the course-offering mode of the Department of Economics, most of the courses in this programme adopt a lecture-tutorial teaching approach, with a two-hour lecture and a one-hour tutorial; while some courses with smaller class sizes adopt a sectional-approach, with a three-hour lecture. Each course consists of at least 39 contact hours of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops or project/thesis supervisions. Some practical courses may also include tour visits, laboratory sessions, service learning or other learning activities.
As a world-class liberal arts institution, Lingnan promotes student exchange with institutions around the world. Our partner institutions in overseas countries or Mainland China allow students to engage with the world.
Teaching and learning of the courses take place in forms of lectures, tutorials and other class activities. Class participation and discussion, group work and independent learning are expected from students. Audio-visual materials and learning management systems (e.g. Moodle) are used to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness. Statistical training in the computer laboratory enables students to familiarise themselves with the basic statistical computation in education research.
A key feature of the programme is the ample opportunities provided for students to participate in the study visits and workshops in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), where they can observe and experience the real-world situations in different cities of the GBA. We provide courses that entail service-learning components to enhance students’ learning experience.
