Humanities in Public Life

Turning Life Stories into Public Memory
In Lingnan’s Chinese writing courses, students work with social-welfare organizations to collect oral histories, craft life stories, and produce books that circulate beyond the classroom. These collaborations have preserved the experiences of older people, recovering drug users, psychiatric rehabilitants, and foreign domestic workers.
The project with foreign domestic workers won the championship at the 2025 Lingnan University Service-Learning Project Presentation Competition. More importantly, the work shows what writing can do when it becomes a form of listening: marginalized experience enters the public record, and students learn that authorship carries social responsibility.
Commoning and Community Co-creation
The Centre for Cultural Research and Development connects students with grassroots organisations, cooperatives, social enterprises, and sustainable communities, allowing cultural theory to meet the everyday work of building fairer social relations.
Its ‘commoning’ framework examines change across five connected dimensions: individuals, peers, communities, institutions, and the natural environment. Through internships, cultural exchanges, community activities, nine urban-commons case studies, and the volume COMMONING: Community Co-creation and Shared Spaces, research becomes a shared practice of participation, belonging, and collective decision-making.

The Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall
The Chamber of Young Snow Art Exhibition Hall is a space of encounter: between past and present, artistic tradition and contemporary interpretation, scholarly research and public appreciation.
Through exhibitions, workshops, publications, and educational programmes, the Hall brings Chinese art into living conversation with diverse audiences. It offers not only objects to be admired, but cultural forms through which to think about beauty, history, memory, craftsmanship, and the continuing force of artistic tradition.
At Lingnan, art is approached as a way of knowing: a means of cultivating attention, deepening cultural understanding, and expanding the imagination across generations.
Lingnan Arts Biennale
The arts become most powerful when they create spaces in which people can gather, listen, reflect, and imagine together. Lingnan Arts Biennale 2025, held under the theme ‘Metamorphoses,’ explored transformation in humanity, creativity, and technology through Chinese philosophical thought and global artistic traditions.
Bringing scholarship, performance, music, Cantonese opera, visual culture, and public discussion into a shared cultural event, the Biennale makes the spirit of liberal arts visible and participatory: not confined to classrooms, but alive through performance, dialogue, and creative encounter.
