Subsite Background

环球亚洲的数位历史文学硕士

dhga engDigital history (DH) has enabled a deeper understanding of the past through the use of digital technologies in the research, analysis, and preservation of texts, visuals, and other cultural artifacts. The intersection of computational tools and digital methodologies with history has revolutionised the discipline in many ways: historians are now able to find and collect sources at their fingertips; analyse historical patterns and uncover once-marginalised voices through computational tools and methodologies; and visualise, present, and disseminate historical materials and findings to wider audiences through digital media and Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) simulations. This has, in turn, created unprecedented opportunities for researchers, teachers, students, and the general public to engage and appreciate history as users, observers, creators, and/or contributors. Although rooted in the 1960s, the increasing number of digital history initiatives in academic programmes, funded projects, and research institutes over the past few decades strongly evidence the inseparability of DH from future attempts to advance the field of history in a digitised world. The Master of Arts in Digital History in Global Asia (DHGA) at Lingnan University offers a unique, comprehensive approach to this emerging field.

What Will I Study?
With a more specialised scope on global Asia’s history, our proposed MA programme will allow students to gain an in-depth understanding of digital technology in relation to the history discipline through specific case studies. As students put their acquired knowledge and skillsets to practise in individual/group digital projects, they will gain a stronger understanding of how digital tools help advance the field of history and the dissemination of historical findings. It will be attractive to those seeking to advance their research in history, strengthen their knowledge and skills of teaching, writing, and presenting Asia’s global past, and/or develop fundamental knowledge and skills in the use of digital technologies in the historical field and the information and cultural sectors.

Who is this programme for?
The programme is suitable for both recent bachelor degree graduates and for professionals looking to develop their careers. No specific technical background is necessary – we provide you with the training necessary to understand digital humanities in historical research and different digital methods to interpret historical analysis.

What can I do with the DHGA programme?

Designed to align with the Level-6 parameters of Hong Kong Qualification Framework, DHGA graduates will be well-positioned for careers that will be in demand in a range of fields such as education, the creative media, cultural management, heritage preservation, information science, programming, and academia.

Why Lingnan History?
The DHGA MA will be the first MA of its kind, both within Hong Kong and the wider region, and Lingnan’s liberal arts ethos combined with the Department of History’s teaching talent, make the university the ideal home for such a programme. Students will also be taught by a strong faculty in both the History of Asia and in the Digital Humanities.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of  DHGA, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the origins, developments, rationale, basic methods, and uses of digital history in relation to Asian studies;
