Public Lecture with Prof. Brian James Baer on 9 Dec 2024

You are cordially invited to a public lecture titled “Competing Canons: Translation Journals, World Literature, and the Cold War” to be delivered by Prof. Brian James Baer on 9 December 2024 (Monday). The lecture will explore how translation journals influenced competing canons of World Literature during the Cold War, focusing on the Soviet journal Inostrannaia Literatura and the CIA-funded Encounters. Key topics include the packaging of translations and the role of visuals in shaping internationalism.

Prof. Brian James Baer is Professor of Translation Studies at Kent State University where he teaches courses on the theory and practice of translation at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level. He is founding editor of the journal Translation and Interpreting Studies and co-editor of the book series Literatures, Cultures, Translation (Bloomsbury), with Michelle Woods, and Translation Studies in Translation (Routledge), with Yifan Zhu.
