Two Lingnan Students Win Awards in China Daily Hong Kong S.A.R. English Competition

After topping the ranking in LingnanSpeaks 2026, three Lingnan students moved forward to the semi-final of the China Daily 21st Century Cup National English Speaking Competition (Hong Kong Region) and two of them successfully entered the final, which was held on Saturday 9th May 2026 at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre. The two Lingnanians, HOANG Thu Trang and Seemi NISAR, won the Second Runner Up and the Best Impromptu Speaker prizes, respectively. The students were mentored by the Visiting English Tutors at the Centre for English and Additional Languages throughout their journey.

At the final, Seemi was the second of the finalists in the university category to take to the stage and perform her prepared speech on the topic “setbacks are one’s greatest guarantee of success” within the four-minute time limit. The prepared speech was immediately followed by a three-minute impromptu speech and a two-minute question and answer session. Trang was the last of the finalists to present her prepared impromptu speech before the agonising wait for the results. The impromptu speech topics they selected at random were related to the abolition of GPA at universities and the increasing popularity of solo dining and both students managed the challenge very well.
