Humanitarian technology refers to the application of technology and innovation to improve the welfare and well-being of people, especially the underprevileged and underserved communities. It encompasses a wide range of approaches, methods and tools designed to address and solve humanitarian challenges in a more efficient, scalable, and impactful way.
The goal of humanitarian technology is to facilitate access to essential services - such as healthcare, education, clean water and sanitation - to enhance the overall quality of life for affected populations. It emphasises on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. Involving a multidisciplinary approach, it draws on expertise and collaboration from engineering, information technology, health sciences, social sciences and other fields to develop solutions that are not only effective but also economically viable, culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable.
Here at Lingnan University, we encourage students to play a crucial role in the development and application of humanitarian technology. They bring a unique perspective that combines empathy, critical thinking and creativity. Through our programmes, they develop a greater understanding of the social, cultural, and ethical implications of the social challenges. They apply their interdisciplinary skills to collaborate with experts from other fields to ideate on solutions, as well as apply design innovation methodologies to innovate on complex technical solutions, to make them accessible to the billions of people in need and achieving a more widespread social impact.
