Students Gain Insights into Smart Port Operations at Modern Terminals

On 12 March 2025, MSceBSCM Programme students visited Modern Terminals Limited in Hong Kong. Manager Joey Fan opened the session with a presentation highlighting the port’s strategies to maintain Hong Kong’s competitive edge, including digital transformation and carbon reduction measures. Students actively inquired about challenges like labor shortages and automation implementation timelines, demonstrating strong engagement with the company’s vision.

The group then toured the Central Control Center, observing real-time coordination of ship berthing schedules and AI-optimized crane operations. Live dashboards displaying cargo flow metrics and emission levels particularly captivated students. “The integration of sustainability analytics into daily operations was eye-opening,” shared one student.

Modern Terminals staff commented on the students’ focused questions on IoT applications and career pathways. The visit concluded with renewed student interest in interning at the company, underscoring its role in shaping future logistics talent.
