Leadership and Teamwork in Action
In the course HRM3352, students delve into the dynamic interplay of leadership and teamwork through hands-on Service-Learning projects. These initiatives empower students to engage with their communities, address social issues, and develop essential skills that prepare them for future challenges. This year, four impactful projects allowed students to explore cultural heritage, advocacy, and mentorship, fostering a spirit of empathy and civic responsibility.
Advocating for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Students embarked on a meaningful journey focusing on the experiences of individuals in recovery. They collaborated with DEI@WORK, which organised training sessions on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. SideBySide provided insights on how to interact with and support people in recovery, particularly in volunteer settings.
The pinnacle of their efforts was an exhibition where students showcased booths that highlighted the challenges faced by individuals in recovery. This event served as a platform for dialogue, encouraging community members to reflect on inclusivity in their practices.
Sustaining Heritage Through Picture Books: A Journey into Hakka Culture and Responsible Tourism
In a meaningful adventure rooted in cultural appreciation and sustainability, students embarked on a journey to the Hakka villages of Mui Tsz Lam and Yung Shue O. Their mission: to uncover the rich stories and traditions of these communities while exploring how tourism can be managed responsibly to protect and preserve local heritage.
Students engaged deeply with village residents, gathering heartfelt narratives that not only inspired their creative work but also highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism practices—such as respecting local customs, minimizing environmental impact, and supporting community-led initiatives.
To prepare for this artistic and educational endeavor, students participated in training sessions on Generative AI techniques, equipping them with the skills to create vibrant illustrations that brought their stories to life in a way that was both engaging and respectful of cultural authenticity.
The result was a series of beautifully illustrated storybooks designed for K1–P3 children, celebrating Hakka culture and village life. These books featured Augmented Reality (AR) elements, allowing young readers to access videos and audio recordings that showcased the Hakka language, traditional practices, and sustainable living in the villages.
Enriching Cultural Experiences for Young Learners
This project aimed to enrich the cultural experiences of primary school students through engaging after-school activities. Students collaborated with YMCA Tin Shui Wai Tin Chak Centre to plan and facilitate a series of sessions that introduced various cultures through games, movies, and music.
By creating an inclusive and fun environment, they helped young learners appreciate diversity and develop a deeper understanding of different cultural backgrounds.
Empowering Future Leaders
The Dream Circle Mentorship Programme focused on equipping high school students with essential DSE exam-taking skills and guidance on further studies. Students organised a series of interactive workshops in partnership with YMCA Tin Shui Wai Tin Chak Centre.
These sessions fostered meaningful connections with mentees, covering topics such as academic success and career planning. By sharing valuable insights, students inspired the next generation and helped them navigate their educational journeys.
Through these diverse Service-Learning projects, students in HRM3352 not only enhanced their leadership skills but also made a significant impact in their communities. Each initiative fostered empathy and understanding, preparing students to become compassionate advocates for social change.
