Biographical Note

Binhua Wang is Professor in the Department of Translation. Previously he was Chair/Professor of interpreting and translation studies at University of Leeds (UK) from July 2017, where he served as Director of the Centre for Translation Studies and Programme Manager of the MA programmes in interpreting. He was elected to the “European Academy of Sciences and Arts” in 2023 and a Fellow of the “Chartered Institute of Linguists” in 2016. 
He sits on the Executive Committee of the U.K. “University Council of Languages” and the Interpreters Committee of the Translators Association of China. He serves the international academic community as the Co-editor of Interpreting and Society – An Interdisciplinary Journal and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Psychology (language sciences) and on the editorial boards of many journals, such as Babel, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, Forum. International Journal of Interpretation and Translation, Chinese Translators Journal, Foreign Language Teaching & Research, Translation Quarterly and The Linguist. 


He has taught extensively for two decades in three top professional T&I programmes in the UK, Hong Kong and China mainland. He has been a regularly invited trainer for the annual “China Training for Trainers of Translation and Interpreting Programmes” organised by the Translators Association of China and the China National Committee for Translation & Interpreting Education during the past 10 years. Parallel to his academic career, he has also been a veteran Chinese/English conference interpreter with over 20 years’ part-time interpreting experience. 
His research interests focus on interpreting and translation studies, with interdisciplinary extension to digital humanities, human-AI interactions in T&I and cross-cultural communication of Chinese literature and culture, in which he has published many research articles in world-leading SSCI/A&HCI/CSSCI journals and in edited volumes published by Routledge, John Benjamins, Springer, Brill, Palgrave and Bloomsbury. He has authored two monographs published by Routledge and another two published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. He edited with Prof. Jeremy Munday Advances in Discourse Analysis of Translation and Interpreting (Routledge). He has been invited to give keynote speeches to over 30 international conferences and guest talks in many universities around the world.

PhD Supervision

I have supervised/co-supervised nine PhD students to completion, who have published research articles in top international journals such as Across Languages and Cultures, Meta, Perspectives, Interpreting, The Translator, Language and Intercultural Communication, System, Humanities and Social Sciences Communication, Critical Discourse Studies, Text&Talk, Journalism, Chinese Translators Journal, etc.

I welcome PhD research proposals on various aspects of interpreting and translation studies, particularly PhD applicants with interdisciplinary backgrounds, such as:

  1. computing or NLP background, who are keen to explore human-AI interactions in T&I;

  2. psycholinguistic or neuroscience background, who are keen to conduct interdisciplinary research into the interpreting process as complex bilingual and cognitive processing;

  3. multimodal analysis background, who are keen to analyse translation and interpreting in the multimodal approach;

  4. literary and cultural studies background, who are keen to explore cross-cultural translation of Chinese literature and culture.
