The Master of Liberal Sciences (MLS) programme is a great demonstration of Lingnan University's exemplification on the institution's long-standing commitment to liberal arts education while adapting to contemporary education market demands.
The term "liberal sciences" is a combination of "liberal arts" and "sciences”, referring to fields of study that encompass a broad range of disciplines within the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and formal sciences. The liberal arts traditionally include subjects such as literature, philosophy, history, and the arts, emphasising critical thinking, communication skills, and a broad-based education. "Liberal sciences" refers to an interdisciplinary educational approach that combines elements of both liberal arts and scientific disciplines, integrating both scientific knowledge and the analytical and reflective skills associated with the liberal arts, aiming to provide a comprehensive and holistic education.
As science and technology become crucial areas in modern workplaces, and fields like sports, music, media, arts and relevant fields gain socio-economic significance, the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (WJYSIS), leveraging its existing specialty, has innovatively extended Lingnan's liberal arts education into these above-mentioned fields. The MLS programme integrates technology with traditional disciplines, equipping students with sports, music, media and arts talents, and students with relevant background and experience, with advanced tools include coding and programming, project/event management, product design, AI and data analysis to support their career development, as well as advancement. The programme reflects global educational shifts and responds to the evolving socio-economic trends.
Advancing research and education in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary fields represents a commitment to innovate at the academic frontier and pay special attention to niche areas. By offering a “Liberal Sciences” taught postgraduate (TPg) programme to sports, music, media, and arts talents, and students with relevant background and experience, the MLS programme not only extends the horizon of conventional “sciences” education, but also enriches the content of liberal arts education of Lingnan University. We are confident that such a well-educated group of special talented students and cross-disciplinary scholars will have a solid and rapid career advancement.
The MLS programme is a one-year full time master’s programme with Mandarin Chinese as its medium of instruction.
