Internship

Introduction

Internships are an essential element of experiential learning that benefits students’ holistic development. This proposal outlines the establishment of a new internship programme for the Department of History at Lingnan University. The programme aims to provide students with practical experience in enterprises, professional organisations, and NGOs related to the field of history, while enhancing their academic learning through real-world applications.

Programme and Requirements

The summer internship is a non-credit-bearing programme designed for Year 2 and Year 3 history-major students. To be eligible, applicants must have completed their first year of study and cannot be in their final year at the time of application.

Students will work for approximately 4 to 8 weeks from May to August at their assigned workplaces with specific work schedules determined by the institutions. They are expected to effectively apply their historical knowledge, research techniques, and analytical skills. Assessment will be based on continuous evaluation by work supervisors, using the standard student evaluation form provided by the department to evaluate various aspects of students’ work performance. In addition, students are required to submit a reflection report and internship photographs to the department within 14 days of completing the internship.

Students who receive an overall performance evaluation of Good or Excellent from their supervisors and have submitted the required documentation may apply to the department for a Summer Internship Certificate, recognising their achievements.

Application

The programme will involve assigning students to various institutions, providing them with valuable hands-on experience in the field of history. To enrol in the programme, students must submit an application form along with required supporting documents. Specific prerequisites, such as a minimum CGPA and proficiency in certain languages or skills, may be required. Interviews may be conducted to assess students’ abilities and manage expectations effectively. With multiple organisations available for placement, employer-student matching will be based on criteria including employers’ specific requirements and students' interests, academic performance, personal statements, and any interview outcomes. This structured approach ensures that placements are well-suited to both students' skills and the expectations of the partnering organisations.
