Credit Transfer and Course Exemption
A student who has successfully completed a course at an appropriate level offered by another institution may apply for credit transfer / course exemption.
Credit Transfer
If a similar course is offered by LIFE, the student will be exempted from taking the course and granted equivalent credits, after the approval of the application.
If no similar course is offered by LIFE, the student may be exempted from taking a free elective course in his/her programme curriculum which is to be decided on a case-by-case basis, and granted equivalent credits, after the approval of the application.
A minimum grade C- is required for credit transfer of courses taken in relevant programmes recognized by LIFE.
Course Exemption
If a similar course is offered by LIFE, the student will be exempted from taking the course after the approval of the application. However, credits are not granted for the course exemption and the student has to take another course (which may be a specified course or any other course) to make up the total number of credits required for graduation.
No grade will be given (with exception specified in paragraph 8 below and Section 11.2 of the Regulations Governing Associate Degree, Higher Diploma and Diploma Programmes*) but all exempted or recognized courses and the number of credits transferred will be shown in the student’s transcript.
Normally, a student may not be granted credit transfer / course exemption for more than 50% of the required number of credits for the Associate Degree, Higher Diploma and Diploma programmes.
A student is required to obtain from LIFE an application form for credit transfer / course exemption, complete and submit the application to LIFE before the beginning of a term. For year courses, applications should be submitted before the beginning of the first term. All such applications must be accompanied by original supporting documents and their photocopies. LIFE will return the original supporting documents to the applicant after inspection. The application should be considered and approved as appropriate by the Director not later than two weeks after the beginning of a term.
A student should not enroll in a course for which he/she has been granted exemption (with or without credits). If the student has enrolled in a course and is subsequently granted exemptions (with or without credits), he/she is not required to apply to drop the exempted course because LIFE will drop the course after the exemption is granted.
For a student who has participated in an approved student exchange programme of LIFE, credits of recognized courses obtained from the partner institution will normally be transferred to his/her programme at LIFE as approved by the Management Board of LIFE. The actual grades/marks of recognized courses obtained in the partner institution will be shown in the transcript of the student, but will not be counted in the calculation of grade point averages.
