“Longtermism, Existential Risk, and Technology: Detech and Deconnect” by Prof. Alexander Guerrero
07 May 2024

Online Research Seminar

Prominent longtermists such as William MacAskill highlight technological stagnation as one of the more serious threats to promoting longtermist interests, and they defend technological development on the grounds that it is a way both of improving the quality of lives that people live and helping us to avoid existential risks. In this talk, I argue that we should adopt a more critical view of technology and technological development, especially if we are focused on longtermist considerations and existential risks. I argue for two claims—Detech and Deconnect—that suggest a very different strategy for furthering longtermist interests. I conclude by suggesting that even if one is not fully persuaded by my arguments, they should at least be enough to give one substantial pause and indirectly support “cluelessness” worries for longtermism.
