Biography
Professor Song Yongduan is the Dean of the School of Data Science and Henry Y. W. Fong Chair Professor of Industrial Data Science in the Division of Industrial Data Science. Professor Song is an internationally renowned scientist who contributed in reliable neuroadaptive control systems. His research interests are broad and include intelligent systems, guidance, navigation, and control, as well as bio-inspired adaptive and cooperative systems, with a particular focus on data-driven control and machine learning methodologies. Professor Song was elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) (中國工程院外籍院士) in November 2025. Professor Song has published 12 books and over 400 scientific papers, and holds 100 patents issued by China, the USA, and Japan. He has received numerous research grants from NSF, ONR, AFOSR, NIA, DOE, etc. He has made significant contributions to the academic community through his role as an Associate Editor for several prestigious international journals, including several leading IEEE journals. Currently, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems. He has been recognised as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for multiple consecutive years and has been listed as one of the most highly cited researchers by Clarivate since 2021.
Abstract
In this seminar, I will share how self-confidence and hard work form the twin pillars of research. I will trace how overcoming doubt builds the courage to ask new questions, while disciplined effort turns ideas into evidence. Each fuels the other: hard work strengthens confidence, and confidence sustains effort. Drawing from my own projects, I will show how this dynamic helps me navigate challenges and produce meaningful work. Ultimately, nurturing these inner pillars is just as vital as technical skill in the research journey.
