Building Bridges: Doctor of Policy Studies (DPS) Alumni Gathering and Networking Event
On 22 February 2025 (Saturday), the Doctor of Policy Studies (DPS) Alumni Gathering and Networking event was successfully held by the School of Graduate Studies (GS). The event attracted over 80 participants, including DPS alumni from around the globe, esteemed professors, and current students, creating a vibrant platform for connections, sharing insights, and celebrating the growth of the DPS community.
Prof Maggie Lau, Programme Director of the DPS programme, kicked off the event with heartfelt welcome remarks. She reflected on the programme's journey since its launch in the 2018-19 academic year, proudly noted that the first batch of graduates was celebrated in 2022, and the growth of the alumni network to nearly 40 members. Her speech emphasised the gathering as an opportunity to reminisce, reconnect, and build new professional relationships.
A key moment in the event was the insightful presentation by Prof Howard Ling, MH, Chairman of the Advisory Board and Chief Consultant of Impact Incubator. He discussed the career opportunities within the Greater Bay Area, highlighting the region's potential for growth and innovation. His extensive experience in social enterprise and community transformation provided valuable insights for alumni navigating their career paths.
The gathering featured an engaging alumni sharing session, where distinguished graduates shared their learning experiences and career advancements following their time in the DPS programme. Dr Lin Mian (林綿), Dr Wu Sudan (吳素丹), and Dr Xiao Zhipeng (肖治鵬) recounted inspiring stories that illustrated the programme’s impact on their professional journeys, reinforcing the importance of the DPS community in fostering personal and professional development.
The event concluded with a group photo and a networking lunch, offering participants the chance to deepen connections and explore potential collaborations. This successful gathering not only strengthened the DPS alumni network but also highlighted the diverse perspectives that enrich the community. With alumni travelling from around the world, the exchange of ideas reaffirmed the programme’s role in shaping future leaders in policy studies.

It was a joy to see familiar faces at the DPS alumni gathering! Reconnecting with professors and colleagues brought back great memories, and inspiring current students on their journey was truly special.
The gathering was a tremendous success! From the venue to the speeches, everything was spot on. The energy of first and second year DPS students reminded me of my own school days. Their enthusiasm was uplifting and a testament to what they can achieve with perseverance.
I hope this becomes an annual event where we can continue to reconnect, share stories, and support one another. I am grateful to have attended and look forward to many more gatherings filled with laughter, learning, and friendship!

It was a valuable opportunity to connect with past graduates and gain insights into their research and careers. The event facilitated knowledge exchange, networking, and professional development. Hearing from alumni who successfully navigated their doctoral journey was particularly enlightening. Another key lesson was the importance of resilience and patience in doctoral research, as well as maintaining motivation during setbacks. Effective time management and communication with advisors and peers were highlighted as essential skills.
