LEAP Activity: “Academic Writing Workshop” 2025/26 Concludes Successfully
In January 2026, the Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) programme under the School of Graduate Studies (GS) successfully launched the Academic Writing Workshop for Term 2. Building on the momentum from a highly well-received Term 1 series, this workshop was specially designed to strengthen postgraduate students’ writing skills for end-of-term papers and capstone projects, helping them effectively prepare for upcoming graduation requirements.
The workshop attracted around 50 postgraduate students, who participated both online and in person. Under the expert guidance of Mr Ryan Windsor, Senior Lecturer from the Centre for English and Additional Languages (CEAL), the sessions placed a strong emphasis on precise language use and formal academic expression, guiding students to refine their vocabulary, tone, and style in scholarly writing. Rather than concentrating on research techniques, the workshop focused on how to articulate complex ideas with clarity and linguistic accuracy across various components of academic papers, including literature reviews and research discussions. Participants gained practical strategies to communicate, analyse, and present their research findings with greater coherence, precision, and confidence.
Adopting a dynamic hybrid format, the workshop blended concise lectures with interactive discussions and practical language activities. This approach fostered an engaging and supportive learning environment, encouraging students to participate actively and apply newly learned writing strategies in real time.
Participants shared positive feedback on the workshop. Chen Jiacheng, from the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics programme, commented, “This workshop is very useful. I’ve learned a lot from the lecturer - the way he presented and the overall quality of the workshop are very impressive.”
Similarly, Wu Fengxun, from the Master of Science in Environmental, Social, and Governance Management programme, mentioned, “This is a very practical and insightful workshop! I’ve been trying to improve my academic writing and presentation skills recently, and this workshop perfectly matches my needs.”
A heartfelt thank you to Mr Windsor and all the participating students for the active participation and commitment. The GS LEAP programme remains dedicated to enhancing students’ linguistic proficiency and supporting academic excellence, fostering greater confidence and proficiency in academic writing.
