LEAP Activity: Enhancing Competitiveness - Highlights of the “Cantonese Courses for Career Preparation" for Postgraduates

In January and February 2026, the Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) programme under the School of Graduate Studies (GS) successfully delivered the “Cantonese Courses for Career Preparation”. Designed specifically for postgraduate students, these courses equipped participants with practical Cantonese language skills tailored to professional settings in Hong Kong.

Under the guidance of dedicated and experienced instructors, participants engaged in comprehensive training focused on industry-specific vocabulary, workplace etiquette, and effective conversational techniques. This targeted approach significantly enhanced learners’ readiness for career opportunities within the local job market.

This engaging programme attracted over 100 passionate postgraduate students. In an interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere, participants supported one another’s growth, expanded their professional networks, and deepened their understanding of the local workplace culture.

Liang Yuxin, a student in the Master of Liberal Sciences programme, shared his appreciation for the courses. He said, “The courses were meticulously planned and professionally delivered, reflecting the organiser’s sincerity and commitment. Distinguished Cantonese experts shared in-depth linguistic knowledge and practical workplace applications. They were exceptionally patient, offering consistent positive encouragement and detailed guidance that greatly improved our listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The two sets of printed teaching materials, closely aligned with workplace needs and scientifically structured, were excellent for after-class review and practical use. It was truly a high-quality language training experience. “

Wang Zihan, a student in the Master of Arts in International Higher Education and Management programme, was pleased to have improved her Cantonese speaking skills. She shared, “I attended four Cantonese courses organised by LEAP. From knowing almost nothing from the start to now being able to understand the teachers and speak simple Cantonese myself. I have gained so much! I hope more classes can be added in the future so we have opportunity to form groups and practise together.”
