LEAP activity: “Entering the Campus Neighbourhood: The Diverse Aspects of San Tin, Yuen Long”- a relaxed journey into Hong Kong's local culture
On 14 March 2026, the Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) programme, under the School of Graduate Studies, successfully held “Entering the Campus Neighbourhood: The Diverse Aspects of San Tin, Yuen Long”. Over 20 postgraduate students set aside their academic worries and, together with professors, ventured into San Tin, Yuen Long, to savour its unique historical culture and vibrant community stories.
Led by an experienced guide, the group visited San Tin’s iconic landmarks and lesser-known hidden corners, listened to local histories and community narratives, and discovered how these places connect with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Along the way, participants also enjoyed afternoon tea in authentic Hong Kong-style cafe.
Many were impressed by the richness of San Tin’s heritage and the resilience of its residents in preserving their traditions amidst rapid urban development. This hands-on experience also fostered meaningful conversations among students and professors, encouraging reflection on how sustainable practices can be integrated into everyday life.
Huang Cixuan, a student in the Master of Arts in International Higher Education and Management (HEM) programme, was pleased to have this opportunity. She shared, “This LEAP trip was great! I enjoyed the unique Cantonese architecture and beautiful natural scenery. Meanwhile, through the detailed explanations provided by the trip guide, I gained a deeper understanding of Hong Kong's history and culture. During this trip, I made many new friends from different programmes. The organisation of this event was fantastic, and the process and time were well managed. We had an enjoyable time!”
