LEAP Activity: Learn Cantonese, Spread Warmth @ Lingnan – Helping Seniors Go Mobile Concludes Successfully
The Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) programme under the School of Graduate Studies is committed to community engagement and social inclusion by organising “Learn Cantonese, Spread Warmth @ Lingnan - Helping Seniors Go Mobile”. On 9 January 2026, approximately 20 postgraduate students, led by Dr Chloe Siu, Senior Lecturer at the School of Graduate Studies, attended the digital workshop hosted by the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department at Princess Alexandra Community Centre in Tsuen Wan, to promote digital inclusion among seniors.
Elderly participants received patient, one-on-one guidance from the students, who helped them master various smartphone functions, including popular communication applications and online safety practices. This hands-on support empowered the elderly attendees to gain confidence and independence in using digital tools for everyday tasks.
The atmosphere at the workshop was warm and encouraging, characterised by mutual respect and enthusiasm between students and seniors. Beyond imparting technical skills, the event created meaningful intergenerational connections and reinforced a shared sense of community.
For the student participants, the activity offered valuable opportunities to enhance their Cantonese proficiency, deepen their understanding of Hong Kong culture, and embody Lingnan’s spirit of “Education for Service”.
Ms Zhang Yingjun, a student from Master of Science in Health Analytics and Management programme, was deeply moved by this activity, particularly when teaching seniors to use mobile applications to prevent scams. She said, “We are helping them touch the future, yet they remind us not to forget where we came from. This activity has given me a deeper understanding of the true weight of ‘Tech for Good’, and has made me cherish even more the value I can create for others.”
This initiative exemplifies the core values of the LEAP programme, which strives to nurture students’ intercultural competencies and social responsibility while contributing positively to the local community.
