Lingnan University Co-Hosts Third and Fourth Age-Friendly City Seminars in Indonesia

The School of Graduate Studies at Lingnan University, in partnership with Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Gunung Kidul, and Elderly Rights Advocacy Treatment (ERAT) in Indonesia, recently co-hosted the third and fourth age-friendly city (AFC) seminars on the 22nd and 31st of July 2024, signalling the conclusion of the AFC seminar series in Indonesia. The seminars aimed to share Hong Kong's expertise in developing age-friendly cities to enhance understanding and implementation of age-friendliness in other regions.
 

Dr Chloe Siu from the School of Graduate Studies and Institute of Policy Studies at Lingnan University led the seminars, focusing on the application of gerontechnology to promote age-friendly cities.
 

An average of 99 participants, both online and onsite, attended the seminars on the 22nd and 31st of July 2024. After the sharing by Dr Chloe Siu, the participants were treated to a virtual tour of the Lingnan Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab, offering an immersive experience with technological tools designed to enhance the quality of life for older adults.

 

Feedback from an evaluation survey conducted on all four seminars held between April and July 2024 revealed a significant increase in understanding of AFC principles and practices among Indonesian participants. Prior to the seminars, only 16.4% and 20.1% rated their understanding of AFC as "very good" and "excellent". However, post-seminars, these figures surged to 38.2% and 47.3%, respectively, showcasing the seminars' impact on the participants’ knowledge of AFC.

 

Looking ahead, the project will progress to the next phase with workshops scheduled in Gunungkidul regency and Yogyakarta city of Indonesian, on the 26th and 27th of August 2024. These workshops aim to train participants to act as AFC ambassadors, guiding them on assessing an ideal "Age-friendly City/Community" and elucidating how diverse stakeholders can contribute to building age-friendly environments. The training will revolve around four AFC domains: social participation, respect and social inclusion, communication and information, community support, and health services.
