Lingnan University’s School of Graduate Studies Participates in InnoCarnival 2025

To help students enrolled in MHM504 and HAM505 Technology in Health and Social Services transition from textbook learning to real-world experience, the School of Graduate Studies of Lingnan University organised a field visit to the InnoCarnival 2025 (the Carnival), hosted by the Innovation and Technology Commission, on 20 October 2025. This year’s theme, “I&T Unlocks Your Dream,” showcased a wide range of local innovative inventions and research achievements.

Mr Wen Zhijie, a student from the Master of Science in Health Analysis and Management (HAM) programme, expressed that visiting the Carnival helped him experience various designs and products applied in the field of health services. “This event gave me the opportunity to personally see and experience a variety of designs and products applied in the field of health and healthcare services. I was particularly impressed by innovations ranging from clinically significant 3D-printed bone technology and multi-pathogen diagnostic machines developed by emerging virus detection companies, to smart medication management boxes and intelligent care systems designed for elderly rehabilitation and support. One highlight for me was trying out a powered device designed specifically for stroke patients. Unlike the exoskeletons I had imagined, it mimics the pneumatic action of muscle fibres, which was truly astonishing and provided excellent assistance for movements such as hand rotation. I also learned that future versions would incorporate brain-neural control, which left me in awe of technological innovation. In addition to exhibits from local Hong Kong companies, the eight prototype designs from the Carnival were equally impressive. Although some of these technologies have yet to be widely adopted, the design concepts behind them are exactly the insights I most want to bring back to the classroom for further learning.”

The School of Graduate Studies also invited 2024-25 graduate Ms Amanda Pan Feifan from the Master of Science in Smart Ageing and Gerontology (SAG), along with her team, to showcase their original innovative project— H-Air Home Intelligent Environment Monitoring System. Its core function is to monitor in real time the data of combustible gases (such as methane and carbon monoxide) in the home environment of elderly individuals, with data synced to caregivers’ mobile applications. Amanda hopes to use elderly-friendly technology to safeguard the safety of elderly people living alone and alleviate caregiver anxiety. She shared, “I am deeply grateful to my alma mater for providing this platform to showcase our technological innovations. While completing H-Air, I also hope to promote Lingnan’s outstanding projects to a wider public audience. At this event, I saw that Lingnan is also presenting research products from other departments—each tool has the potential to truly improve lives. I am willing to contribute my efforts to make creativity visible and bring innovation into people's everyday lives.”

Dr Chloe Siu, course leader for the MHM504 and HAM505, said that the onsite visit enabled students to understand the development of social sciences, data science, and information technology in Hong Kong, aiming to cultivate students’ ability to promote and apply interdisciplinary age-friendly technologies. “This was not only a very meaningful experiential learning opportunity but also a chance for students to witness Hong Kong’s research ecosystem firsthand and reflect on how technology creates value in elderly care, health management, and social services, thereby inspiring innovative thinking and driving future service upgrades.”

In addition to visiting the InnoCarnival 2025, the students will also visit the LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab and attend the Gerontech & Innovation Expo cum Summit in November. These opportunities allow them to explore various innovative gerontechnology products and application solutions, discover new technological trends, and engage in discussions and exchanges with industry leaders and experts.
